Preparing for your headshot session

When you are prepared for a headshot session you will ensure you get the best possible outcome. Here are three essential steps to prepare for your headshot session.

  • Plan Your Look:
    • Wardrobe: Choose clothing that reflects your personal style and fits the purpose of the headshot. Look for solid colors or simple patterns that won’t distract from your face. If you are wearing dark clothing either pack a lint roller or use one from my studio.
    • Grooming: Schedule any necessary grooming appointments well in advance of your session. This includes haircuts, beard trims, or salon appointments for makeup application if desired.
    • Accessories: Select any accessories you plan to wear, such as jewelry or glasses, and make sure they complement your outfit and enhance your appearance.

  • Practice Posing and Expressions:
    • Facial Expressions: Spend some time practicing different facial expressions in front of a mirror. Experiment with smiles, serious looks, and variations in eye contact to find the expressions that suit you best.
    • Body Language: Practice good posture and body language to convey confidence and approachability. Avoid slouching or crossing your arms, as this can make you appear closed off in the photos.
    • Relaxation Techniques: If you’re feeling nervous about the session, practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or visualization to help calm your nerves and feel more at ease during the shoot.

  • Communicate with Your Photographer (me):
    • Share your expectations: Communicate your goals and expectations for the headshot session with your photographer beforehand. Let them know how you plan to use the headshots and any specific requirements you have.
    • Location and Logistics: Confirm the location and logistics of the shoot, including the date, time, and duration of the session. Make sure you know how to get to the location and arrive on time.
    • Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask your photographer any questions you have about the session or the process. They can provide valuable guidance on posing, lighting, and other aspects of the shoot to help you feel more confident and prepared.
    • Share preferences for touch-ups: are there blemishes and wrinkles you’d like touched up or softened? Maybe you have moles that you either want to keep or have removed like Lauren Bacall said: ‘Your whole life shows in your face, and you should be proud of that.’

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared for your headshot session and more likely to achieve the results you desire.
